Secrets of the Ocean Realm

 

Secrets of the Ocean Realm is a series of films about marine life produced by Howard Hall Productions and Devillier Donegan Enterprises for PBS. The films were produced by Michele Hall and filmed and directed by Howard Hall. Originally intended as ten half-hour shows, PBS elected to pair the programs and air the series as five one-hour specials. Until recently this award-winning series was only available on VHS in this paired format. Now, ten years after its original broadcast, Readers Digest has re-released the series on DVD as 10 30-minute episodes under the new title “Wondrous Secrets of the Ocean Realm.” The series includes the following titles:

Creatures of Darkness: About nocturnal marine life

Survival in the Sea: About survival strategies of marine creatures

Sharks: All about sharks

The Great Whales: All about the largest species of great whales

Cathedrals in the Sea: About life in the kelp forests of California

Star Gardens: About the beautiful invertebrate covered reefs of cold waters

Mountain in the Sea: About the marine life of Cocos Island, Costa Rica

City in the Sea: About the Caribbean coral reef community

Filming Secrets: A behind-the-scenes look at our film crew’s 2-year adventure making the series

The DVD package comes with six DVDs including one bonus episode, Life in the Sea, filmed by John and Jack McKenney

Howard and Michele also authored a companion coffee table book, also titled Secrets of the Ocean Realm. The book is hard bound and illustrated with over 140 color images.
